This Black History Month, we are using our platform to highlight Black-led organizations and businesses and also share some of ECOSS’ partnerships! We hope you will join us in supporting or giving to these organizations. At ECOSS, we proudly center the voices of immigrants and refugee communities and recognize that dismantling systems of racism is a prerequisite for environmental justice.
Many immigrant and indigenous communities in Seattle have fishing traditions, histories, and connections to the Duwamish River. ECOSS is partnering with Public Health to build out a youth program that focuses on safe fishing practices for youth who live near the Duwamish River.

ECOSS led a series of guided in-language hikes using the Trailhead Direct service this past summer for immigrant, refugee, and BIPOC communities. Hear the team’s reflections on these trips and connecting these communities to resources for outdoors access.
In a shift towards community-centered fundraising, ECOSS hosted a happy hour style event to connect with community and celebrate a new chapter for the organization.
The ECOSS team attended the Green Transportation Summit and Expo and learned about advances in EV technologies. This is particularly relevant in light of Seattle’s Transportation Electrification Blueprint and goal of 90% of trips being zero-emission by 2030.
The community came together with ECOSS, Green Seattle Partnership, and Mountains to Sound Greenway to enjoy a morning of caring for the forest and learning about the species of plants and animals in one of their local parks.

A second-generation immigrant herself, Chiyo understands not only the inequities that immigrants and refugees face, but also the potential for ECOSS to empower immigrant and Black, Indigenous, and Communities of Color in self-actualizing sustainable solutions.
ECOSS brought community voices to outdoors initiatives through outreach around King County’s Trailhead Direct service and leading inclusive hiking trips for immigrant and refugee communities. In 2021, King County Parks, The Wilderness Society and ECOSS took that collaboration to new heights.
