Simple choices that we make daily
can improve our home health environment. There are many
alternatives that are less expensive, safe and easy to use for
you and your family. Discover them at a “Green” Home Party –
with an ECOSS presenter. At the Green Home Party, ECOSS will
introduce basic methods that can help you choose safer products
for you and your family. For example: How to read Labels and
Signal Words to watch out for.
Sustainable Landscaping
A lush green lawn is not necessarily
a healthy lawn. Replacing lawn areas with native plants is a healthier option. Native plants require less attention. And
since native plants require less water, they are less likely to
be affected by disease and reduce the need for chemical agents.
Consider chemical agents only as a last resort when all other
options have failed. For example: use a weed puller, instead of an herbicide.
NOTE: Some sensitive areas have restrictions on pesticide use.
Check the King County website for most current listing of banned
pesticides. Remember, what you put on your yard may be tracked
into your home!
Water Conservation
Consider switching to a low-flow
toilet. Check with your local water utility for rebate programs
for Toilet Replacement. Currently in the City of Seattle,
rebates are available for both home owners (income restrictions
may apply) and businesses. Planting drought tolerant and native
plants is another way to reduce water use in your garden.
